Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) Atlantic Policy Advisory Group (APAG) meeting in Jahorina, Bosnia and Herzegovina (06/11/2009)

"The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina outlined some of the challenges facing Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as its achievements and future plans relating to its Euro-Atlantic aspirations."

The UK joined other NATO and NATO Partner countries at the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) Atlantic Policy Advisory Group (APAG) meeting in Jahorina, Bosnia and Herzegovina on 28-30 October 2009. The EAPC APAG is a format where all 50 members of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership (28 NATO Allies and 22 NATO Partner countries) can address current strategic issues in an informal format.

The meeting was opened with a keynote address from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sven Alkalaj, in which he outlined some of the challenges facing Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as its achievements and future plans relating to its Euro-Atlantic aspirations. Following this, Minister Alkalaj participated in an interactive discussion on the Western Balkans. In the second session, participants addressed the challenges facing the Euro-Atlantic Partnership and exchanged ideas on how we could make the Partnership work better to meet the needs of both Partners and Allies. The final session of the meeting was on the new NATO Strategic Concept. Professor Julian Lindley-French (University of Leiden), who has been involved with the consultation process for the Strategic Concept, opened the session and his thought-provoking address was followed by a lively exchange of views on how Allies should use this opportunity to examine NATO’s role in dealing with security challenges in the future.

The ideas, proposals and conclusions from the meeting will be taken forward in the formal Partnership meetings which take place throughout the year at NATO Headquarters in Brussels.
