NATO/Partnership for Peace (PfP) Trust Funds

NATO/PfP Trust Fund Policy was set up in September 2000 with the aim of promoting defence reform in Partner Countries by providing a framework by which NATO Members and Partners work together to identify, implement and fund specific projects.  These projects were initially established to assist Partner Nations in the safe destruction of stockpiled anti-personnel landmines (APLs) under the Ottawa Convention but this has since been expanded to include several other areas of defence reform.  Subsequent projects have included the destruction of surplus munitions, unexploded ordnance, Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and rocket fuel oxidisers and the resettlement and retraining of redundant personnel.

The UK has contributed to several NATO Trust Fund projects in recent years (see table below) and on the 15th June 2006 took a joint lead role in an €5.83m Trust Fund to assist Bosnia Herzegovina with the resettlement of redundant personnel.  In July 2008, the UK took a joint lead role in launching a Trust Fund in Building Integrity and Reducing Corruption Risk in Defence Establishments, contributing £10,000.

On 27 February 2009, Mr Stewart Eldon, UK Permanent Representative to NATO, addressed the Monterey Conference.  The theme was Building Integrity - Comprehensive Approach in Action.  In his speech, Mr Eldon mapped out the way ahead for Building Integrity in Defence Establishments.
